Scottie Scheffler, the world’s No. 1-ranked golfer, was detained by police Friday morning prior to the second round of the PGA Championship.
“World No. 1 golfer Scottie Scheffler has been detained by police in handcuffs after a misunderstanding with traffic flow led to his attempt to drive past a police officer into Valhalla Golf Club,” ESPN’s Jeff Darlington reported on social media.
“The police officer attempted to attach himself to Scheffler’s car, and Scheffler then stopped his vehicle at the entrance to Valhalla. The police officer then began to scream at Scheffler to get out of the car. When Scheffler exited the vehicle, the officer shoved Scheffler against the car and immediately placed him in handcuffs.”
According to the report, Scheffler was being detained in the back of a police car.
The PGA Championship has been delayed more than an hour due to an accident outside Valhalla Golf Club that involved a pedestrian fatality, according to Louisville police.
Darlington reports Scheffler was surprised – even shocked – by being detained after proceeding past police, who he thought was security.
“Please help me,” Darlington reports Scheffler said to the reporter as he was detained by police.
Scheffler is scheduled to tee off at 7:48 a.m. (8:48 a.m. ET) on Friday.
He holed out with a 9-iron from 167 yards on the first hole for eagle, the highlight in a round of 67. Scheffler failed to birdie the par 5s on the back nine, however.
