A female prison guard in the UK had an affair with an inmate convicted of armed robbery and giving birth to his child— and somehow avoided jail time.

31-year-old Rachel Stanton had an illicit relationship with prisoner Edwin Poole during his 10-and-a-half-year sentence at HMP Five Wells in Wellingborough.

The affair was discovered after prison staff found three intimate photos and a suggestive love letter in Poole’s cell during a search.

CCTV footage also captured Stanton and Poole entering a prison storeroom for an hour of “intimacy,” according to the court.

Following the discovery in July 2022, Stanton was suspended from her position and Poole was transferred to another prison.

Despite this, Stanton continued to visit Poole.

While the couple eventually had a baby together, they predictably ended up separating.

Stanton, who hails from Irthlingborough, Northamptonshire, admitted to willful misconduct in public office at Northampton Crown Court.

She cried in the courtroom as she received a nine-month prison sentence, suspended for 18 months, and was ordered to complete 20 days of rehabilitation activities.

Despite barely sentencing her to anything, Judge David Herbert was less than gentle with his words.

“You should have known better,” he scolded her. “Your offending is so serious it demands a custodial sentence—I have to sentence you for a single offense. In short, you had a relationship with a prisoner.”

The judge cited the “clear indisputable evidence” found, including a sexually explicit letter and intimate images, and noted that CCTV footage showed them together in a private room.

According to Metro.uk, Judge Herbert also acknowledged Stanton’s guilty plea and stated that he was satisfied the relationship was “entirely consensual.”

Stanton had been a trainee G4S security first-line manager at HMP Five Wells in 2022 when she met Poole, who had been jailed in 2018 for armed robbery.
